Grass Disposal
Just a reminder that in accordance with State Law grass can no longer be thrown
away as regular garbage. The City of Middletown suggests leaving the clippings
on the lawn for fertilization. Grass clippings can also be composted or used as
mulch. For a free brochure, contact the City Recycling Coordinator at 344-3526
or E-mail her at:
kim.orourke@cityofmiddletown.com.
If residents occasionally cannot leave it on the lawn, they can bring it to the
Recycling Center for composting. All grass must be emptied out of bags and
in order to reduce odors, we ask residents not to store grass in bags for long
periods of time before delivery to the Recycling Center.
grass composting.
Recycling Nickel Cadmium Batteries: (860) 344-3526
Nickel Cadmium batteries (or ni-cads) are mandated by state law to be recycled.
Cadmium is extremely toxic to our health and environment if disposed of
improperly. Ni-cads are found in portable telephones, radios, and power tools,
and they are usually marked "nickel cadmium - dispose of properly." In
Connecticut, these batteries can be brought back to a retail drop off store.
Stores that process the recycling of the batteries in Middletown are:
-
- Boomer McCloud on DeKoven Drive
- Midtown Photo on Main Street
-
- Radio Shack on Washington Street
- Staples on Washington Street

Bulky Waste Collection
The Bulk Waste Collection Service is suspended each year from Oct. 20 - Dec. 31
due to a shifting of resources for fall leaf collection. Please schedule your
collections before or after these dates. Bulk waste is collected in the winter
months, weather permitting.
Click
here for information on the Recycling Center and Bulk Waste Charges.
The City offers a collection once every three years for bulky waste materials.

- Scrap metal and household appliances
Items such as brush, wood, and metal must be placed in their respective
piles. Brush must also be cut to 4' lengths and tied with string.
The following items are NOT acceptable in the bulk waste
collection:
-
-
- Plastics and plastic toys
-
-
-
-
-
- Rugs
- Electronics - televisions, computers, VCR, DVD, telephones, radios
The bulk waste pick-up is only
available to residents of 1-3 family homes and condominium complexes once
every three years. For more information, call (860) 344-3511.
If you are not eligible for your pickup, these same items can be brought to the
City Recycling Center. Bulky items will be weighed and charged at the rate
of $84.00 per ton. Payment can be made by credit card or check at the
Recycling Center.
