Recycling Events

Ewaste Recycling

The City of Middletown currently recycles electronic devices at its recycling center for a charge.  Once Connecticut's E-Waste Recycling Law goes into effect, covered electronic devices will be taken from residents at no charge.  The DEP is estimating its process will be completed by November 2010.  Once the law is in place, residents will be able to bring electronics (up to seven (7) units at a time) to the Recycling Center for no charge.   The City is currently working to accept materials sooner than this for no charge.  Stay tuned!  For more information, contact the City Recycling Coordinator at (860) 344-3526.

Grass Disposal
Just a reminder that in accordance with State Law grass can no longer be thrown away as regular garbage. The City of Middletown suggests leaving the clippings on the lawn for fertilization. Grass clippings can also be composted or used as mulch. For a free brochure, contact the City Recycling Coordinator at 344-3526 or E-mail her at:
kim.orourke@cityofmiddletown.com. If residents occasionally cannot leave it on the lawn, they can bring it to the Recycling Center for composting.  All grass must be emptied out of bags and in order to reduce odors, we ask residents not to store grass in bags for long periods of time before delivery to the Recycling Center.

Click here for information on grass composting.

Recycling Nickel Cadmium Batteries: (860) 344-3526

Nickel Cadmium batteries (or ni-cads) are mandated by state law to be recycled. Cadmium is extremely toxic to our health and environment if disposed of improperly. Ni-cads are found in portable telephones, radios, and power tools, and they are usually marked "nickel cadmium - dispose of properly." In Connecticut, these batteries can be brought back to a retail drop off store. Stores that process the recycling of the batteries in Middletown are:

  • Boomer McCloud on DeKoven Drive
  • Radio Shack on Washington Street
  • Staples on Washington Street
